1. What is a "Big"?

A "Big" is an adult volunteer who is matched with a "Little" in a one-to-one friendship. Together, the "Little" and "Big" spend time experiencing activities of their choice. This could be shooting baskets, going to a movie, working on homework, or just talking.

2. What is a "Little"?

A "Little" is a child enrolled in the program who is matched with a "Big".

3. Does your program cost me anything?

The activities and time that you spend with your "Little" do not have to be activities that cost money. Families are encouraged to pay for activities in accordance to their means.  We encourage you to find activities that are low cost or free.

4. How much time should I spend with my "Little"?

In general, we ask that you spend at least 2-4 times per month with your "Little" and that you make a commitment of at least one year to the match between you and your "Little".

5. What kind of support do I receive from your staff?

Professional staff will provide support, education and guidance throughout the duration of your mentoring relationship. You will receive training prior to starting your volunteer work and will receive ongoing communication with your assigned case manager to ensure a safe and successful relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County also offers the Mentoring Answer Book, which addresses many other issues volunteers face.

6. What is involved in the application process?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has developed a comprehensive application process to maintain a safe and quality program for youth. Prior to acceptance into the program potential volunteers will:

  1. Complete a written application
  2. Submit to a nationwide criminal background check, a DCFS check, DMV, and sexual abuse register
  3. Have an in-home interview and home assessment
  4. Attend a new mentor training program
Once a mentor has successfully completed this process, their information will be reviewed by a screening committee for final acceptance.

7. What type of activities can I do with my "Little"?

Mentoring works because people grow in relationship to other significant people in their lives. The activities you choose are just the backdrop to a meaningful relationship. Mentoring occurs while you walk in the park, ride bikes, fly a kite, bake cookies, read a book and wash the car. Big Brothers Big Sisters offers group activities for matches. This provides an opportunity for youth to develop social skills and feel like they belong to a larger community.

8. How many children do you serve?

We have served over 500 children in the past year.
